-- Is it a virtual hangout for millions of American teenagers, like a sprawling electronic shopping plaza, or a magnet for sexual predators and pornographers?

MySpace.com is a bit of both, say Rhode Island education officials who have banned the fast-growing teen social networking website from 80 percent of their schools out of concern was putting children at risk. --

I don't think it is accurate to call it a teen website. It is very popular among friends of mine who are 20+, and even the mother of one friend has a profile.

There are an infinite number of ways to share information about yourself online; myspace is a popular one, but one only. Articles like this only raise the "scare factor" of the uninformed, myspace-witchhunt-style.

The energy and money behind things like this could be better applied towards educating and raising awareness among kids in regards to sharing information online carefully.

Schools already have to have filtering software as of two or three years ago. Those other sites of which you speak are also supposed to be banned, either as "dating sites," "message boards," or some other prohibited type of website.

Yes, there are adults (and garage bands) there, but I won't put myself there because I don't want my 14 year old students (who talk about their pages frequently) to find it and bother me. I liked the previous comment on another similar post from a parent whose child didn't know that the parent kept tabs on the child's drinking / partying / etc. by means of the child's myspace page, though. Teenagers don't seem to understand how open things on the internet can be.

I still don't know what schools for primary grades are doing on the internet. I could understand computers, technology, lab equipment and calculators; but, not the internet.
