-- About 10% of Dutch people admit to having racist opinions, considering themselves in particular to be more intelligent than foreigners, according to a poll published yesterday.

The survey by the Motivaction polling agency published in the protestant daily Nederlands Dagblad also showed that half of Dutch people have an aversion to Muslims, 43% think that Islam is a threat to peace and two-thirds that the faith is at odds with modern life in Europe.

However 73% denied being racist and said they favoured a multicultural society.

Hardline Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk has introduced obligatory tests of Dutch language and culture for prospective immigrants, and called for a ban on the use of a foreign language in the streets of the country. --

What are the questions asked in the poll?

According to Nederlands Dagblad (this source is in Dutch, so unless you speak Dutch, I'm afraid it's of no use), which is defined as a Christian and involved newspaper, there seems to be a core of racists, who give themselves a 7 or higher on a racism scale from 1 -10. They consider the Dutch to be more intelligent than immigrants, they have no problem with discrimination and if people need to get fired because of a reorganisation, they think the immigrants have to go first. 'Public people' (is that proper English?) such as MPs, should be allowed to refer to groups of immigrants with racist stereotypes, and it should be allowed to insult the prophet Mohamed in whatever way.

Around this core of die-hard racists, there's a larger group of 17% who admits to being racist once in a while. They think immigrants are lazy, intolerant (!) and criminal.

Men turned out to be more racist than women. Most 'die-hard racists' are young, between 14 - 25, only have basic education, are sensible to status and conservative in their norms and values, or, on the other hand, don't care for norms and values at all, just wanting a comfortable life.

It seems the degree of racism didn't vary a lot between cities and rural areas.

The questions themselves aren't mentioned in the article. Apparently 1020 Dutch people were participating in the survey.

But wait ... you speak Dutch, don't you? All the better, now you can check for yourself and don't have to rely on my translation.

Yes I'm Dutch, but thanks for the translation nonetheless :)

The specific questions asked are not given, nor somewhat more specific information about the subject group (city people, or from the country side?). I'm really interested in this information to see if the replies follow from them or are relatively uninfluenced by them.

I suppose they asked questions to both people from the city and the country side. Otherwise they couldn't have concluded there wasn't a difference in the degree of racism between cities and rural areas, right?

Apologies, I glanced over the Dutch article looking for questions, but forgot to check the areas mentioned.

With regards to the question in the article you just linked to:

Do you think Islam is compatible with modern European life?

I believe that there are two views of Islam in the Netherlands, that of fundamental Islam and moderate/modern Islam. Depending on the way the survey was conducted people might have been inclined to associate the question with fundamental Islam (which I believe to be incompatible).

My point in all this is not that I absolutely refuse to believe the poll, but that polls in general have way too much power in politics, which is hard to pin through especially if you don't know the exact questions.

Polls are a little bit like statistics, don't you agree?
