From the page:

-- The suggestion that Marco Materazzi might have insulted Zinédine Zidane's mother during the World Cup final seems justification enough for the head-butt that followed. But why is it that the worst insults in the world are always about your mum? --

In some cultures if one man spoke ill of another's mother it would fully warrant him getting a face full of bald Frenchman's bonce - or worse.

I had to laugh at that :D

Whatever Materazzi said must have been incredibly offensive to Zidane. You can see that he just snapped. Without condoning Zidane's behaviour I also hope that Materazzi is called upon to defend himself - his "sportsmanship" must also be called into question.

In cricket, this is called "sledging" though you can be sure of an early bath if the umpires hear you saying anything even remotely insulting. In football this happens all the time - it's just a way of getting your opponent wound up, perhaps something employed by Cristiano Ronaldo against Wayne Rooney, and no doubt some England players have used it against other teams too.

I've heard that Materazzi called Zidane a "Son of a Whore" or similar. Allegedly. It's something going round a few football message boards anyway, among other things. Pretty disgusting thing to say.

I think it was only justification enough for Zidane to stay on the field, score his penalty and take his country to glory. He chose to retaliate in a stupid way.

I dunno. I tend to favor the gender neutral "asshat."

"assclown" is another good one. i think the point of insult was to get Zidane to head-butt him. it worked. and then they won. also, it's not like it was the first time someone insulted someone else's mom during a game.

"Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elderberries!"

I dunno if that's the worst thing anyone could say to you, I have a feeling most people (and especially women) hate the 'C' word. You know which one I'm talking about...

The 'C' word as in refering to female genital organs isn't all that offensive in the Netherlands (and to a lesser extent, Belgium). The Dutch can be found to say e.g. "Damn, I really had a c--- day!" or "The weather is c--- today" (literal translations, the Dutch equivalent 'kut' can be a noun, or an adjective). Interglot gives 10 different words for that one 'C' word, and I can think of some more.

Wow, you really do learn something new everyday :)

I should have been more specific, here in America it seems to be a lot more insulting. It seems to be quite popular in England (at least in English movies I've seen, which are few). I've heard some people try to "take the edge off" of it (or something) by saying it's an abbreviation for "Can't Understand Normal Thinking." I reserve it only for people I really hate, and they are few.

My friend had a pretty good way of dealing with "your mother" insults: he would just look shocked, then deeply sad and serious, look the person dead in the eye and say "my mother is dead." The other person either was shocked and shut up, or ended up getting hit.

          "Can't Understand Normal Thinking."

C U Next Tuesday is another version. It's a really offensive word in the UK, probably the most offensive along with the ever-popular muddyfunster (you know what I mean).

Haha, no idea. I'm not one for swearing that much so it's often much more funny to make up words that sound similar to rude words :D

As far as single words expressed as phrases, I offer the following for your consideration as well:

"F-C-K. All that's missing is YOU."
