From the page:

-- Robin Rothwell is concerned about global warming and wars fought over foreign oil. The Seattle resident even makes his living selling environmentally sound homes as a certified "EcoBroker."

Now Rothwell has taken his goal of "living green" up another notch -- importing one of the first all-electric cars to Washington. --

While I support any product of idea that reduces the amount of greenhouse emissions being released into the atmosphere, it seems a bit naive to think that this car has zero REAL emissions. How about the massive amounts of greenhouse gasses released in the production of this electricity? I think it is a bit of a out-of-sight = out-of-mind mentality.

That may seem obvious, but I think that the way the writers of this article have presented this product as a 'zero emissions' vehicle is a bit misleading.

Having said that, they look pretty neat :-D

OK... look, electric cars are as clean as the electricity they use... the fact that electricity can be made with a multitude of technologies means that we can focus on cleaning up power production, rather than having the car problem along with the coal problem.

If you have a standard interface, you can change the backend any time you like... that is the reason electric cars are part of the solution.

Behind My Screen, you make an excellent point (of course, that's what I've come to expect). If we consider that transportation produces a certain amount of pollution, we can choose whether we believe it is better to try to combat that pollution at millions of tailpipes or at thousands of smokestacks. There are probably certain economies of scale that can be taken advantage of by choosing the latter, even though, as kurt111 points out, the process of producing that electricity is not exactly green. Thanks!

I totally agree with what you have both said. You're right, electric cars are part of the solution. I guess I just would like to see more implementation of alternative power production thats all, rather than all the focus coming down to individual choices.

Though I never said they werent part of the solution, I just think that they could have mentioned energy production in the article thats all.

Agreed, kurt111. It's an important issue and I didn't mean to take anything away from it. I feel exactly the same about hydrogen powered vehicles. It's a great idea and all, but as I understand it, it takes a lot of energy to produce hydrogen. It'll be very nice to have water coming out of our tailpipes, of course, but as you point out the production of the fuel is not exactly green. Thanks for making a great point here.
