Our insatiable appetite for the big picture is threatening the planet. A scientist has warned that if half of British homes buy a plasma-screen TV, two nuclear power stations would have to be built to meet the extra energy demand.

How is this consistent with Tony Blair predicting a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions? This is what gives liberalism a black eye - to talk the talk, but not walk the walk: all for the love of sports! Stop being a spectator and go for a walk, or, better yet, get a backpack and immerse yourself in nature before old age takes its toll. Develop a nature commentator in your mind's eye as a constant companion. The Brits may prefer David Attenborough. I'm sure Calvin has a Jacque Custeau rattling around in his head, or would if he could do the accent...

Anyway, my advice is to keep tv watching to a minimum, especially if there are young ones in the house. They need fresh air and time to study to get prepared to solve the many crisis resulting from the legacy that will be their inheritance.
