Australia's senior Muslim cleric Sheik Taj Aldin al-Hilali has apologised for any offence caused by his comments that immodestly dressed women provoke sexual attacks.

The Australian reported today that, in a sermon delivered last month, Sheik al-Hilali likened scantily clad women to uncovered meat eaten by animals.

"I unreservedly apologise to any woman who is offended by my comments," he said in a statement today."

I had only intended to protect women's honour, something lost in The Australian presentation of my talk."

Irma - important seed in several respects. (a) the Imam's remarks were grossly offensive and false - nothing justifies gratuitous violence to women or indeed to anyone; (b) he has apparently apologized; (c) the anti-Arab anti-Semitic and Islamophobic politicians and media in racist White Australia has gone salivating bonkers over this - much to the concern of the eminently reasonable Australian Muslim community who have bitterly attacked the Imam; (d) the xenophobic Islamophobes in their salivating racism over these offensive comments ignore the horrible actuality of Australian Christian clergy indulging in actual child rape against both boys and girls and their non-racist clerical colleagues bending over backwards to protect them.

I am profoundly offended by the Imam's horrible words. Many of my closest and dearest friends are Pacific and Australasian Muslim (Australian Aussie Mozzie and New Zealand Nozzie Mozzie is our joke!) women that range from non-observant to strictly observant Muslims - one of my dearest friends is still waiting for a public apology over the clerical assertion (around the time of the horrible fatwah on Salman Rushdie) that non-observant people such as herself should be stoned to death for apostasy but because Australians thought otherwise the "stoners" would abide for the moment by majority Australian rather than (extremely and falsely interpreted) Sharia law.

Of course the hysterical Islamophobes compound their hypocrisy by ignoring the horrendous actuality of Australian war crimes against Muslims (notably Muslim women and Children) - the post-invasion excess deaths (avoidable deaths, deaths that didn't have to happen) in the Occupied Iraqi and Afghan Territoires now total 3 million - 1,000 (one thousand) times the number of people murdered on 9/11 (see: http://open.newmatilda.com/crosswire/?cat=15 ).
